Password-protect a Subdomain with Plesk

Boston Web Studio uses the Plesk Control Panel to manage its web hosting accounts, and while Plesk has served us well for years, it does have one shortcoming that baffles me and many other people: it doesn’t make it easy to password-protect a subdomain. It does provide an easy way to password-protect directories under the root domain and it also provides an easy way to create subdomains, yet it doesn’t combine these two features; if I want to password-protect a subdomain, I have to do it manually, and that means poking around the web server using a command-line interface.

Boston Web Studio has been creating websites since January, 2005, yet during the first three years we were never asked if credit cards were accepted for invoice payments. During those first few years we simply received checks and had given very little thought to receiving any other form of payment. Not long ago, however, three clients asked if we could take credit cards and, unfortunately, I had to answer “no,” but I promised that we would soon.

Website Front-end Quality Control Considerations

Every good web agency practices some form of code-based quality control during the creation of their clients’ websites. For example, development is paused for a short amount of time every few of days/weeks/months and the code that has been written so far is tested to ensure it meets certain standards defined by the agency. These tests can include anything from checking the security of the database to determining how a visitor who is color-blind might interpret the design. Since we specialize in design and front-end development, there are a few things that we always test to help ensure a good user experience for visitors and to reduce inconsistencies among many common web browsers.
